On top of the world at York Way

Last week, members of the Comm Comm UK team joined City of London officers, local ward councillors and members of the Higgins construction team for a ‘Topping Out’ ceremony at the York Way estate in Islington.

The event was to mark the completion of the first new block on the estate, which is part of a scheme delivering 91 much-needed new homes, all dedicated to social rent. When complete, the development will also offer enhanced public spaces with landscaped greenery, a community room, estate office, new children's play areas and a resident-growing garden.

This project includes four new buildings in total - Swaledale House, Herdwick House, Ryeland House and Aberdale House - each named after breeds of sheep, a nod to the site’s origins as sheep pens for the former Metropolitan Cattle Market, which stood on the site until the 1950s.

The group also had a chance to stop for photos in front of the new hoarding surrounding the site, charting the history of the estate, as well as memories and recollections from long-time residents. See the fab pictures below.

Comm Comm UK is delighted to be working on this scheme and is excited to assist with organising this kind of milestone ceremony. The scheme is due for completion in late 2025.
